Custom Hardwood Installation For Houston Area Homes

A high-end hardwood install starts long before the first plank goes down. We plan the floor around the architecture, the light, and the way the home is actually used.

What custom installation includes:

  • Detailed in-home consultation and design planning
  • Species selection and sourcing based on the project vision
  • Subfloor inspection, moisture testing, and precision leveling
  • Layout planning: direction, plank placement, and visual flow through the home
  • Custom patterns, borders, inlays, and mixed-species designs
  • Tight, clean transitions between rooms and adjoining surfaces
  • Baseboards, thresholds, and trim work finished to match

Patterns and Custom Layouts

Standard plank installation is just one option. For clients who want something distinctive, we design and install custom patterns that turn the floor into a design element: herringbone, chevron, parquet, borders, inlays, and mixed-species compositions. We’ll work with you or your design team to develop a layout that fits the scale, style, and character of the space.

Species Selection

Choosing the right wood is part design, part engineering. We’ll help you select based on the look you want and how the wood will perform in your home:

  • Oak and white oak: versatile, timeless, and available in a wide range of stain tones
  • Maple: smooth, clean grain with a refined, contemporary feel
  • Hickory: bold character and natural variation for a more dramatic look
  • Walnut: rich, warm tones with a naturally elegant grain
  • Exotic species: unique grain patterns, colors, and hardness levels for one-of-a-kind floors

If you’re blending new hardwood with existing floors elsewhere in the home, we can source and match to create a seamless look across rooms.

Sanding & Finishing

Sanding and finishing are where craftsmanship shows the most and where most installers cut corners. We don’t.

Precision Sanding

Our sanding process creates a perfectly flat, consistent surface so that stain and finish absorb evenly across the entire floor with no swirl marks or waves, and no blotchy areas where the stain pooled or skipped. Each species requires a different approach; softer woods need a lighter touch, harder woods need more aggressive passes, and exotics often require specialized techniques to avoid burning or discoloration. We know how each wood responds, and we adjust accordingly.

Custom Stain and Color Matching

Whether you want a natural, light-washed tone, a deep, rich brown, or a fully custom color developed for your project, we’ll guide you through the process. We create stain samples on your actual wood species so you see exactly how it will look before we commit. For projects that need to match existing hardwood in the home, we’ll develop the closest possible match, accounting for species, age, and how the original finish has changed over time.

Finish Systems Built for Performance

The right finish protects your investment and defines how the floor looks in daily light. Options include:

  • Matte and satin for a modern, understated feel
  • Semi-gloss and gloss for depth and reflectivity
  • High-durability topcoats designed for busy households, pets, and high-traffic areas
  • Oil-based and water-based systems, depending on the look, feel, and cure time you need

We’ll also walk you through cure times and how to protect your floors during the critical first days after finishing.

Tar & Screed Hardwood Floor Installation in Houston

Imperial Wood & Epoxy Flooring specializes in tar and screed hardwood floor installation, a traditional installation method built for solid hardwood flooring over concrete slabs. This system is common in custom homes across the Houston area, where builders and homeowners want a durable, nail-down installation without giving up the feel of real solid wood floors. Not every flooring company offers this service or has hands-on experience with it, and it’s one of the installations our crew handles most often for custom construction and slab foundation homes.

How the Tar and Screed System Works

A tar and screed system uses hot asphalt adhesive, the “tar,” to secure wood screeds directly to the concrete slab. Depending on the finished floor height needed, we install 1×4 or 2×4 screeds to build up the flooring system and create a solid wood substrate. Once the screeds are set, the hardwood is nailed directly into them, giving the floor the same secure, nail-down installation used with a traditional wood subfloor, even though the home was built on a slab.

Why Tar and Screed Is Ideal for Solid Hardwood Over Concrete

  • Separates the hardwood from the concrete slab instead of adhering it directly to the surface
  • Creates a solid wood substrate that accepts standard nail-down installation
  • Well suited to custom homes and slab on grade construction, common throughout the Houston area
  • Paired with a polyethylene moisture retarder layer installed over the screeds before the hardwood goes down, adding another layer of protection between the slab and the wood flooring

Why Choose Imperial for Tar and Screed Installation

Tar and screed installation takes experience most flooring companies simply don’t have. Our in-house crew installs this system regularly for custom home builders, contractors, and homeowners throughout Missouri City, Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland, Spring, The Woodlands, and the greater Houston area, and every project is backed by our 3-year warranty.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing

If your hardwood floors have lost their luster, refinishing can bring them back to life or transform them into something entirely new.

When refinishing makes sense

  • Surface scratches, fading, or dull traffic paths
  • A dated stain color you want to update
  • Worn finish near entryways, hallways, or kitchens
  • Inconsistent appearance from room to room
  • A floor that’s structurally sound but visually tired

What Refinishing Can Achieve

Refinishing isn’t just damage repair. For high-end homes, it’s an opportunity to reimagine the floor entirely: new stain color, new sheen, new character. We can take a dated orange-tone oak and turn it into a cool, contemporary gray. We can strip an old glossy finish and replace it with a matte, European-inspired look. The wood is already there. We bring it back to life.

During your consultation, we’ll inspect the floor honestly and tell you whether refinishing is the right move or if a repair or replacement strategy makes more sense.

Homeowners: we walk you through every option in plain language and make sure the finished floor matches your vision

Designers and architects: we execute to your spec with precision, and we’re comfortable collaborating on material selection, patterns, and custom details

Custom builders: we coordinate with your timeline and workflow, deliver consistent quality across multiple phases, and communicate clearly with your project leads

What Sets Imperial Wood and Epoxy Flooring Apart

Most flooring companies install hardwood. We craft it. The difference shows in every detail.

In-House Crew, Start to Finish

We don’t subcontract. Every project is handled by our in-house team lead by the owner, Ricardo Barona. This ensures consistent quality, direct accountability, and seamless communication. The crew that plans your floor is the crew that installs and finishes it.

Custom Design Collaboration

We work directly with you, or your designer, architect, or builder, to develop a floor that fits the vision for the space. That means walking through every detail together: species, grain, layout, pattern, stain, and finish. Nothing gets assumed or rushed.

Specialists in Every Species

We work with every species of hardwood, from common domestics to exotic imports. Each wood sands, stains, and finishes differently. Knowing how to handle delicate species without burning or blotching, how to bring out the natural grain of harder woods, and how to sand exotic materials to a flawless surface; that’s a core specialty, not an afterthought.

Quality Control at Every Stage

From subfloor prep, acclimation, layout, installation, sanding, staining, and finishing, we maintain hands-on quality control through every phase. The result is a floor that looks right from every angle and performs for years.

FAQs

How long does a custom hardwood installation take?

Timelines depend on square footage, pattern complexity, species, and finish requirements. Custom work takes longer than a standard install because we don’t cut corners on layout, sanding, or finishing. We’ll provide a detailed timeline during your consultation.

Yes. We regularly collaborate with design professionals and are comfortable working from specifications, material palettes, and architectural drawings. We can also contribute recommendations on species, patterns, and finish systems.

In most cases, yes. Matching depends on species, age, and how the existing finish has changed over time. We develop stain samples on the actual wood to get the closest possible match before committing.

All of them. Oak, white oak, maple, hickory, walnut, and a wide range of exotic hardwoods. Each species sands and finishes differently, and knowing how to handle each one is a core part of what we do.

Subcontracting is common in the flooring industry, and it introduces inconsistency. Our in-house crew means the same people plan, install, sand, and finish your floor. That translates to tighter quality control, better communication, and a more consistent result.

For most households, a durable matte or satin finish hides minor scuffs well and gives a modern, natural look. We’ll recommend the right system based on your species, lifestyle, and design preferences.

If the boards are structurally sound, refinishing is usually the smartest move, and it’s also an opportunity to completely change the look with a new stain and finish. If the floor has severe structural damage, we’ll tell you honestly and recommend the best path forward.
